Institution - Kodak Black
Released in 2015 as part of Florida rapper, Kodak Black’s album under the same name, Institution captures the longing that Kodak feels for his girlfriend, who he cannot see because he is in jail (or the institution).
Known for his raw style of beats, Institution is a notable departure from Kodak’s usual sound. The song is very minimalist with a guitar plucking three individual strings in a sad tune, backed by a simple bass beat. Kodak’s voice is the highlight of the song as he slowly sings about how he misses his lover. Kodak' is vulnerable in the song and doesn’t hold back in telling his emotions to the listener.
The song’s simple chorus lingers in your mind long after the track ends. This is a powerful song to listen to whenever you find yourself missing someone or are forced to be apart for some time. The track is a testament to staying strong while apart, and is worth checking out as it shows a different side of a rapper who is normally much more gritty, harder rapper.
